Curtains unfolds at backstage at Boston’s Colonial Theatre, where are new
musical could be a Broadway smash, were it not for the presence of its
talent free leading lady. When the hapless star dies during her curtain
call on opening night Lieutenant Frank Cioffi arrives on the scene to
conduct an investigation. But the lure of the theatre proves irresistible
and after an unexpected romance blossoms for the stage-struck detective,
he finds himself just as drawn toward making the show a hit, as he is in
solving the murder.

The play is a frenetic case of mistaken identity with more twists than a
corkscrew. When Jacqueline decides to visit her mother, husband Bernard
sees an opportunity for a cosy weekend with his mistress. His bachelor pal
Robert calls to announce his return from Hong Kong, so Bernard invites him
along as his alibi, also hiring a cordon Bleu chef to cater a delicious
dinner. But when Jacqueline realises Robert is visiting everything
changes, and the high speed farce begins. The hapless friend Robert finds
himself the target of both amorous attention and wrathful vengeance, while
Bernard tries desperately to salvage a scrap of illicit bliss from the
wreckage of a weekend.
